Soooooo~ This is a old idea I had. I was searching through my old documents and found this ^^. I spiced it up a little bit, fixed the grammar as best I could, and added the prologue. Advice and constructive criticism are welcome C: Enjoy <3
[glow=red,2,300]Year of the Tiger [/glow]
*****Prologue*****
"Steady now,"Ananya's whisper came,"Stay calm Jace. You can do this."
Jace's screams echoed through the long dark hallway. "What have you done?!"She shrieked and sobbed at the same time.
"Jace, Jace. Calm down, its okay." Jace started to scream again, but Ananya's hand covered her mouth. "Hush! If we get caught we're dead."
Jace took a deep breath and started crying again."Where are we?" She asked, this time making sure to keep her voice down.
"It was my parents laboratory."
"Was?" Jace moaned.
Ananya glanced down the hallway and then back at Jace. "You know about the Chinese years right? How they have different animals for each year? Like tigers and dogs and roosters?" Ananya hissed.
Jace nodded.
"Well my parents figured out how to change people into the animal of their year." Jace opened her mouth to same something but Ananya interrupted her.
"Just listen okay? I know it sounds ridiculous, I know. But its true. They made this wacky formula that enables us to transform when we want to. But something went wrong on their first test..and..and..."Ananya's face crumpled and tears started to form in her eyes. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and then continued,"They tested it on my mom. But she got stuck in her animal form. And it messed up her brain. She was a dragon, see. So he had to put her somewhere, and unfortunately he choose our freezer room."
"But wouldn't she die?"Jace asked.
"No..he forced her to drink their ice formula, which makes someone..or something,"Ananya revised,"Stay alive even if their frozen."
"That doesn't sound so bad.."Jace muttered, and then another spasm rocked her body and she had to bite her tongue to keep from screaming.
"Anyway, she broke out of the freezer room and destroyed the lab,"Ananya shuddered,"It was awful. There was glass everywhere, and chemicals that really weren't supposed to be spilled, and,"Ananya stopped,"Never mind. My mom got out into the open and a police officer had been cruising by and he..he shot her. She died."
Jace gasped,"I'm so sorry Ananya-"
"No, its okay. The lab caught on fire, my dad tried to put it out. He handed me a bottle of green stuff, which I later realized was the formula which changed humans into their animal. He told me to run away, and handed me a note. So I ran away. My dad..he died in the fire."
"Oh, Ananya. I'm so sorry, that must have been awful."
"It was." Tears were rolling down Ananya's cheeks now,"But I'm okay now. The note he handed me explained what the green liquid was, and how to fix it so it wouldn't turn out like it did on my mother. I followed the instructions as carefully as I could, and I drank it myself..and it worked! It hurt a heck of a lot at first, so much, in fact, I thought I was going to die." Jace smiled painfully, she was beginning to get a grip on what had happened. "But I didn't. So now I can transform at will,"She said.
Jace nodded, she was laying on her side now, sitting up had become to painful. "You gave the formula to me then?" She whispered.
"I did,"Ananya replied.
Suddenly there was a splash of water and a slithering sound, following by a insane cry of a monkey.
"Crap!" Ananya hissed,"They've found us!"
Chappiieee 1- Coincidences
When I got to soccer practice a few people were already there. I saw Amanda, Jess, Sara, Avery, Kate, and.... someone I didn't recognize. I was far away so I couldn't really tell what she looked like other than she had black hair, with some highlights and shorts and a shirt. Was this the new girl Kate had mentioned at school? Probably. I had missed last practice, which was the first one the new girl had come to. I trotted down the hill to meet the girls.
"Hey Bailey!" Kate called after she had just shot and missed a goal by barely a foot.
"Hey," I said back. Jess and Sara waved, Avery said hi, Amanda pretended not to notice me and dribbled the ball down the field...and the new girl stared at her feet. So Kate had not exaggerated about the shy part. Kate had described the new girl as "really really shy, but she's pretty nice, and really good at soccer." I had yet to prove the last parts though.
"Watch out!" Avery called in my direction. Too late, a ball landed square in my gut knocking me over. I didn't have to ask who kicked the ball, it was Amanda obviously.
"Ow...." I muttered half dazed as Kate held out a hand to pull me up.
"Stupid Amanda," Kate muttered. I saw the new girl glance in our direction. She probably thought we were talking about her.
Pretty soon the rest of our team arived and we began a passing drill. I was going to use this oppurtunity to talk the the new girl.....what was her name? Kate had mentioned it i was sure but...It was something weird. J something? Jacklyn maybe? Yeah that was it. I should probably talk to her... When we were partnered for the drill at least. It was pretty quick that we were matched so I began our conversation.
"Hey....are you Jacklyn?" I asked curiously.
The new girl looked up...she almost looked scared. "Um yeah...But I go by Jace." She replied.
I grinned. "Cool. So I heard you're like, the best played on the team?"
She smiled, but it was forced.
"Um. . . I don't think so. Kate is pretty good and- I..um.."She stuttered. So she was modest. And blushing now. I decided to change the subject.
"These drills are pretty boring though, don't you think?" I said.
"Yeah I like scrimmages better..."
"Mmm, me too." I said, as the group before us finished. "Time to go!" I said cheerfully and dribbled a couple steps, then passed her the ball. Jace stopped it with ease, dribbled around our 'defence' and then passed me back the ball. Hard. It was all I could do to jump out in front of me and stop the ball. No way could I one-touch that into the goal! So I stopped it, and then shot. I smiled at the comforting sound of the ball hitting the net.
"Nice job!" I called to her, and then ran back to the line, taking care to run in the middle of the drill just to annoy Amanda. Jace laughed.
By the end of soccer practice we were all sweaty, bored, hot, and tired. Even Amanda. As usual, there was a lot of noise and confusion as we all tried to get our water bottles. Being on select, our coach provides our water bottles, so they're all the same. Like, exactly the same. At the beginning of the season we all scribbled our names on them with sharpie, but after a couple weeks of have water spilled down them and hands rubbing against them the marker washed off. Fun, right? Anyway, once we figured out whose water was who and gathered all of our stuff together I went to talk to Jace. I was about to say hi again, when something occurred to me. I had never given her my name. I grimaced, sometimes I could be really, really, stupid. Ah, well, I could always introduce myself now. "Hi Jace!" I said.
Jace smiled in my direction,"Hi Bailey!"
I froze. Didn't I just confirm I hadn't given her my name? I knew I didn't. Maybe she heard one of the other girls say it...? But now that I thought about it, I didn't recall anyone mentioning it, other than Kate at the beginning of practice, but Jace had been far away then. I frowned, and glanced at Jace. Something seemed to be troubling her too.
"Whats wrong?" I asked, maybe this would have something do with my name.
"Oh..nothing, I guess. Well..."
"What is it?"
"My friend Ananya. She ripped the skin off her knee a couple days ago and it got infected, and her..parents don't have any moeny to take her to the doctor."
Well that wasn't what I was expecting. "Gosh I'm so sorry! What happened?!"
. . .
It was a while before she replied,"She..tripped.."
I couldn't help myself, I was just too curious sometimes, "On what?"
"Ahum...on..her..shoelace! Yeah, she was, you know, like, walking and her shoe came untied..and then she tripped!" Jace said nodding, as if she was trying to convince herself as well as me.
"Oh, ok. I see. Is there anything I can do to help?" I asked. I wasn't buying her whole "Tripped-on-a-shoelace" story, but it was probably personal, or maybe Jace just didn't know. But it was be very rude to accuse her of lying, and my momma raised be never to be rude. Ever...
"Not really..unless you're parents are, like, doctors or something and they'd give her some wacky disinfectant medicine for free!" Jace laughed, as if it would be crazy if that was true, and there were never coincidences like that.
Little did she know, things like that did happen. My parents were doctors for homeless people, or people who couldn't afford doctors, and who would, without a doubt, give Ananya some wacky disinfectant medicine for free.
"Well then I can help!" I announced.
Jace looked at me funny,"Huh?"
"My parents are doctors for people who can't afford them. I think they'd be happy to help Ananya."
"Oh! Well, ok then! Thanks so much! Um, do you have a phone?" Do I have a phone? What kind of question was that?
"Yeah, you want my number?"
"Yeah..if thats ok with you of course!"
I smiled,"I don't mind, in fact, I'd love if if you had my phone number. Then we can text each other!" Wow, I sounded like and idiot. AS if she didn't know that.
I fished around in my soccer back and found a pen and scratched my phone number onto her hand,"There you go!" I said. Jace smiled, "Thanks. I'll call you once I get home."
"Will do,"I replied, then I heard Kate calling my name, "Gotta go!" I said and then ran over to Kate.
"Were you talking to Jacklyn?" Kate asked.
For a second, I was confused. Then I remembered that her name was Jacklyn, she just went by Jace. "Yup. She's nice. But she goes by Jace."
Kate raised an eyebrow,"No she doesn't."
I looked at her,"What?"
"Well, she didn't tell us that last week. She seemed fine with all of us calling her Jacklyn."
"Huh. That's strange. As soon as I asked if she was Jacklyn she told me to call her Jace."
"Weird..Maybe it was first day jitters?" Kate offered.
"Maybe..."I muttered, but I didn't really believe it.
